Outdoor Graduation Canceled For East Lincoln County High Due To “Credible Threat”Β

LINCOLNTON, N.C. — The graduation ceremony for East Lincoln High School will be moved indoors on Friday due to the possibility of a credible threat, school officials say.

Lincoln County Schools announced the change in graduation plans for the high school, after a former East Lincoln High student, just released from jail, was arrested for threatening the school community just a few weeks prior.

On May 14th, former East Lincoln High student Amos Stevens, 18, was arrested after making death threats on social media. Police say Amos threatened to kill people attending a memorial service for a high school senior in Denver, N.C.

School officials say the graduation on May 28th will now be held in the old gym “out of abundance of care and caution for the safety of our students and community.”

Graduates will each get four tickets for guests, that will be given out during graduation practice Friday morning at 9:30 a.m.

Officials say graduates will get two tickets for seating in the old gym and two tickets for seating in the new gym, and the entire graduation ceremony will be broadcasted for everyone to see regardless of seating.

School officials say an electronic wand will be used to screen all guests and participants before entering the school, and for everyone to expect to see an increased presence of Lincoln County Sheriff Deputies on-site.

Although there are no social distancing requirements for indoor gatherings in North Carolina, school officials ask guests to wear face masks during the indoor ceremony expected to begin at 7 p.m.
