2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season Names

New This Year - There Will Be No Greek Alphabet Names

Though we have already had a named storm in the Atlantic, the “official” start of the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season is tomorrow, June 1st. Subtropical Storm Ana formed May 22nd northeast of Bermuda. This storm was very short-lived and was what we consider a “fish storm” as it did not impact land.

NEW THIS YEAR – Instead of using the Greek Alphabet once we run out of names, we will use a supplemental list or a second list of names. According to the World Meteorological Organization, using the Greek alphabet “creates a distraction from the communication of hazard and storm warnings and is potentially confusing.”

Here are your two lists of names for the 2021 Atlantic Hurricane Season:

There are six lists that are used in rotation and re-cycled every six years. For example, the list above is for 2021 but it will be used again in 2027. Per the National Hurricane Center “The only time that there is a change in the list is if a storm is so deadly or costly that the future use of its name for a different storm would be inappropriate for reasons of sensitivity.”
