CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Charlotte-Mecklenburg detectives say two drivers were seriously injured after a police chase from Charlotte ended in a crash in South Carolina early Wednesday morning.
On June 30th shortly before 4 a.m., CMPD officers located a vehicle wanted in a violent crime.
Officers attempted a traffic stop on the wanted GMC Terrain SUV on Interstate 277 near 3rd and 4th Street in Charlotte, but when the vehicle failed to stop, a pursuit ensued.
Police followed the GMC until the vehicle struck a 2014 Honda, with a green light, traveling west on S.C. Highway 160.
The GMC driver, 28-year-old Patrick McManus, failed to stop for a red light when he entered the intersection in South Carolina around 70-90 miles per hour, according to a news release.
Detectives say after the initial collision, the Honda rolled side to side multiple times and the GMC rotated clockwise out of control until it finally came to a stop just south of the intersection.
Police say McManus was airlifted to Atrium Health Main with serious injuries, and the Honda driver, 25-year-old Ismael Castro, was also taken to a local hospital with serious injuries.
Detectives say during the on-scene investigation they recovered a firearm from inside the GMC.
McManus will be charged with Felony Flee to Elude and Firearm by Felon after he is released from the hospital, according to a news release.
The investigation into this case remains active and ongoing.
