BURKE COUNTY, N.C. — A Burke County inmate has been located Tuesday afternoon after being accidentally released from jail Friday, according to officials.
The Burke County Sheriff’s Office said Vance Edward Hinson Jr. was mistakenly released around 8:45 p.m. Friday after he responded to the name of another inmate. In addition, the detention officer failed to follow the jail’s protocol for releasing the inmate.
Supervisors were informed about the the mistake less than an hour later and law enforcement agencies within a 100-mile radius were sent information about locations Hinson might have been heading to.
On Monday, a warrant was issued for Hinson by Burke County Criminal Investigation Division for felony escape. An internal investigation was also started.
Hinson was located Tuesday around 1:50 p.m. in the attic of a Jenkins Road home in Morganton, according to deputies. He was taken into custody without resistance.
Hinson was in custody for failure to appear, possession of schedule I controlled substance and probation violation.
