Sanitation Worker Killed While Picking Up Debris On I-77 In York County Identified

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — Troopers say a sanitation worker was killed after being hit by a vehicle on I-77 in York County while picking up debris.  The incident happened just before 1:30am on I-77 Northbound near exit 89, which is approximately five miles north of Fort Mill.

Troopers say the driver of the sanitation truck, 29-year-old Robert Hoyt, Jr., had pulled over and legally parked on the side of I-77 to pick up debris.  While Hoyt was out of the vehicle, a 2022 box truck crashed into the parked sanitation vehicle and Hoyt.  Officials say Hoyt died at the scene.

Troopers say the wreck is still under investigation.  This is a developing story.  Check back for updates.
