Boutique Faces Backlash After Sending Email To Prospective Employee Saying She Was “Not That Cute”

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A clothing boutique in Michigan is facing backlash after a TikTok video went viral exposing an email sent to a prospective employee calling her “not that cute.”

One of the owners of Ava Lane Boutique in Auburn Hills, Chuck DeGrendel, posted a tearful Facebook Live apologizing for emailing the applicant inappropriately.

DeGrendel, vice president of operations and husband of the boutique owner, was attempting to email his wife back about 21-year-old Gracie Lorincz applying for a brand representative job with their store, when he accidentally sent the email intended for his wife to the applicant.

In the email, DeGrendel says “This girl is fresh out of college (hope college) and not that cute. She applied to the sales model position. Are you sure you want me to interview her?”

Lorincz took to TikTok to post a video of his response after saying she applied to the boutique where their motto is “Beauty Through Confidence.”

DeGrendel says he has since stepped down from any hiring responsibilities of models for the store.

DeGrendel says “In light of recent events and after deep personal reflection, I have decided to remove myself from the model hiring process at Ava Lane Boutique and all future hires for such positions at Ava Lane Boutique will be handled by our HR representative. I apologize again for what I said and to anyone I offended.”

Ava Lane Boutique is now receiving heavy criticism online for their hurtful comments towards Lorincz.
