CMPD: 19-Year-Old Dies After Car Crosses Into Oncoming Traffic In Northwest Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Detectives say 19-year-old Karla Guerrero-Morales died on Tuesday from injuries she received in car wreck that occurred on Friday, July 9th in northwest Charlotte.

Officers say they responded to the two-vehicle wreck on Mount Holly Road, between a gray 2007 Mercury Marquis and a gray 2014 Toyota Camry, around 10 p.m. on July 9th.

Detectives say Guerrero-Morales was taken to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries after the crash, and the other two occupants of the Mercury and driver of the Camry were taken to a local hospital with minor injuries.

Police say initial investigation reveals the Mercury was heading east on Mount Holly Road, near the intersection of Atkinson Drive, when it suddenly swerved left across the center line in front of the Toyota Camry, traveling in the opposite direction on Mount Holly Road.

The Toyota was unable to stop in time, and its front right end struck the right side of the Mercury, according to a news release.

Detectives say one motorist behind the Toyota stopped, after observing the crash, and called 911.

Police say the Mercury failed to maintain its lane and crossed into oncoming traffic, but at this time, it is unknown whether or not it was a mechanical failure.

The investigation remains active and ongoing.
