Vance High School Officially Renamed; Other Confederate Names to Be Changed in Charlotte
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Charlotte high school has a new name. Vance High School is now Julius L. Chambers High School.
The move comes amid pressure to remove names associated with the Confederacy.
Vance was a Confederate officer and former Governor of North Carolina. Chambers won a Supreme Court case in 1971 that desegregated buses in CMS, paving the way for integration.
The renaming is the latest in an effort to remove symbols of the Confederacy in Charlotte.
The first of nine street name changes will happen in September:
Jefferson Davis Street, Phifer Avenue (September 2021)
Jackson Avenue, Zebulon Avenue, Aycock Lane (November 2021)
W. Hill Street, Morrison Avenue (February 2022)
Barringer Drive (April 2022)
Stonewall Street (June 2022)
