One Killed, Another Seriously Injured After South Charlotte Train, Truck Crash

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A pickup truck driver was killed and his passenger was seriously injured after a crash with a Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS) Light Rail train in south Charlotte Monday night.

Officers responded to East Hebron Street, off of South Boulevard, around 9:50 p.m. after a report of a crash. Upon arrival, officers found a 2017 Toyota Tundra and a LYNX Blue Line train which had been damaged as a result of a collision. The driver of the Toyota, identified as 27-year-old Baltazar Tiquiram Us, was pronounced dead at the scene by MEDIC.

The four passengers aboard the Light Rail train did not report any injuries as a result of the collision; however, MEDIC did transport the front passenger of the Toyota to the hospital with serious injuries, police said.

According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police, through an initial investigation it has been indicated that the LYNX Blue Line train was traveling southbound and passing East Hebron Street when the driver of the Toyota drove around the crossing arms and into the path of the Light Rail train, causing the collision.  The train operator sounded the horn while it was approaching the crossing, and the crossing arms’ warning lights were operational and flashing.  Impairment is suspected for the driver of the Toyota, and toxicology results are pending, police said.

The investigation into this collision is active and ongoing.
