LANCASTER, S.C. — A 14-year-old boy was charged with murder after he shot and killed a 44-year-old woman in a Lancaster home, investigators said.
The boy was arrested Monday evening a short time after the killing when he returned to the home in a car, the Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office said in a statement.
The 9 mm pistol used to kill Veronica McIlwain was found in the trash can in a restroom at a Lancaster convenience store, deputies said.
Deputies found McIlwain’s body responding to a shots fired call to 911. There was no one else home when officers arrived.
The name of the teen charged was not released because of his age, and deputies did not say if there was a relationship between McIlwain and the teen.
The teen is currently charged in Family Court. It will be up to prosecutors to decide whether to ask a judge for permission to try him as an adult.
