Lawmakers Scramble To Reach Deal Before Eviction Moratorium Expires

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Tonight lawmakers on Capital Hill are scrambling to reach a deal to extend the federal eviction moratorium before it expires tomorrow night.

If the order expires thousands of Mecklenburg County families could be served with eviction orders as soon as Sunday.

President Joe Biden has called on Congress to extend the moratorium to the end of the year.

One local expert says there are ways to get rental assistance if you need it.

“There are resources available to assist people. They just have to start the process, and the process is simply dialing 2-1-1,” says Floyd Davis Jr.

The CDC put the eviction moratorium in place last fall in response to the pandemic.

According to the center on budget and policy priorities an estimated 11.4 million adult renters are behind on rent.
