CMPD: Two Suspects Charged In Attempted Murder Investigation Of Duke Energy Worker

Charlotte-Mecklenburg detectives have charged two suspects for the attempted murder of a Duke Energy line technician after an east Charlotte shooting sent the victim to the hospital on the night of June 18.

Police said information from the community helped identify the two suspects in the case as 23-year-old Sammy Garcia and 20-year-old Javier Lee Martinez-Hernandez. Warrants were issued for the suspects’ arrest, and CMPD collaborated with the York County Sheriff’s Office’s Violent Criminal Apprehension Team and the FBI’s Safe Street Task Force, who arrested both suspects in South Carolina.

Garcia and Martinez-Hernandez have both been charged with attempted murder, assault with a deadly weapon with the intent to kill inflicting serious injury, armed robbery and conspiracy to commit armed robbery, according to CMPD. They are pending extradition back to North Carolina.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Crime Stoppers is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in an east Charlotte attempted murder investigation.

The shooting investigation sparked after Charlotte-Mecklenburg police responded to The Plaza, off of East Sugar Creek Road, Friday night following an assault with a deadly weapon call for service. Officers arrived around 9:30 p.m. and located the victim, a Duke Energy line technician, who had been shot.

Officials said the victim was approached by two unknown suspects at gunpoint while performing routine work. Medic transported the victim to Atrium Health with life threatening injuries.

“Our employees are our family and nothing is more important than their safety. This event is a reminder of the many hazards we often face to keep the lights on for our customers and communities,” a Duke Energy spokesperson said. “Our thoughts and prayers are with our teammate, and we are committed to helping him and his family as he recovers. We will continue working closely with law enforcement in their investigation to ensure that accountability is applied appropriately.”

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.
