CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Health officials say so far a total of 59 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in a cluster at Atrium Health Pineville
Officials confirm 50 healthcare workers tested positive, 35 of whom were vaccinated, and nine patients tested positive for the virus.
Atrium Health, with support from NCDHHS and the Mecklenburg County Health Department, is investigating the cluster in Pineville and have taken immediate action to reduce the spread.
This action includes testing all staff, patients, and household members of those who have received positive test results back for COVID-19, as well as educating everyone on how symptoms develop and how the disease is spreading.
Officials say thirty-three positive test specimens have been sequenced so far by the State Laboratory of Public Health, all of which have been confirmed to be the Delta variant of COVID-19, and additional testing, sequencing, and case investigation is underway.
Heath officials say COVID-19 cases have increased by more than 50 percent in the past week, hospitalizations have more than doubled over the past two weeks, and the number of people going to the emergency department with COVID-like symptoms is on the rise.
Now more than ever, health officials urge residents to get vaccinated for COVID-19 to help reduce the spread.
