Recovery Center In Charlotte Hope Haven Suffers Severe Damage Due To Flooding

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The salvaging process begins at Hope Haven Inc. on North Tryon Street. Wednesday night, floodwaters rushed into the rooms of the substance abuse recovery facility. Rising water crept up the facility room walls and destroyed some of the 130 residents’ belongings.

“Right now, we’re scrambling to figure out where they all go. We’re having to double up a little bit more than we normally would, especially in a pandemic,” says President & CEO of Hope Haven Inc. Kristin Blinson.

Out of the 104 rooms on the lower level, 75% were impacted by the flood, says the Director of Development for Hope Haven Christy Baker.

“About half of them are considered a complete loss at this point your the flooring is completely soaked, the water is crawling up the walls, people personal belongings are completely saturated with water,” Baker says.

Blinson says they have some rooms set aside in the facility for COVID cases. Since they don’t have any cases right now, the rooms are empty, so some residents can live there for now.

“Right now, we’re moving residents in the badly flooded rooms into the quarantine rooms, and so course my fear is what happens if we get any more Covid cases that we really won’t be able to adequately quarantine,” says Blinson.

Other community organizations have reached out to help says, Baker. She says their residents will get through this.
