The Week Ahead Looks Wet And Stormy At Times
Expect Abundant Showers And Thunderstorms Over The Next Few Days
A frontal system will remain nearly stationary across the area for the next few days keeping us in a warm and muggy air mass. What is left of Fred will move north from the Gulf coast to the Tennessee River Valley Monday night and then shift eastward on Tuesday. This will enhance our rainfall amounts and could lead to some flooding in urban and flood-prone areas. With the potential of excessive rain falling over already saturated ground in the high country, landslides will be possible in favorable areas of the mountains. Isolated strong to severe thunderstorms will also be possible into the workweek. With all of the cloud cover and rain, we can expect cooler than normal temperatures into mid-week.
The Tropics:
As of Sunday evening, Tropical Storm Fred is about 200 miles south of Panama City, Florida with 45 mph winds. Fred is moving toward the north-northwest near 10 mph and this motion should continue through tonight. A turn toward the north is expected on Monday. On the forecast track, the center of Fred should move across the eastern and northern Gulf of Mexico through Monday. Tropical Storm Fred is expected to make landfall in the western Florida Panhandle Monday afternoon or Monday night.
Grace has weakened to a tropical depression and is south of Puerto Rico with 35 mph winds as of Sunday evening. The system is moving toward the west near 15 mph. A general west-northwestward track is expected over the next few days. On the current forecast track, Grace will move over Hispaniola on Monday, near or over eastern Cuba on Tuesday, and near or over west-central Cuba on Wednesday. By Thursday afternoon, Grace is expected to strengthen back into a tropical storm and will be in the Guld of Mexico northwest of Cuba. Keep checking back with us for the latest forecast track of both systems.
