North Carolina Teacher Refuses To Wear Mask At School, Could Lose Her Job

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A North Carolina teacher’s decision to not wear a mask at school could cost her 2 months salary and ultimately her job. Aurora Preston teaches at South Johnston High School in a school district that requires masks. She says she wore a face mask last school year, but now doesn’t think they’re effective in slowing the spread of COVID.

Preston argues it should be her constitutional right to decide if she wears a face mask. Preston reportedly showed up mask-less last week for a teacher workday. She was told to stay alone in her classroom before being sent home and placed on leave without pay. WRAL in Raleigh spoke with Preston, who says she is also not vaccinated, and says she has no plans to be. She says, “It’s not about the mask. It’s about the control factor. Because after the masks are done, then what? Then it’s about the vaccine. And then what? What comes after the vaccine?”

Preston will be on unpaid leave for nine weeks, before her job status is reviewed.

Our question of the night: was the school board’s decision too harsh or was it justified?
