CMPD: Shot Fired Near Epicentre, Suspect Detained

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded near the Epicentre in Uptown Charlotte after reports of an armed person Monday morning.

Officers arrived to South College Street near the Epicentre shortly after 6:45 a.m. in response to reports of an assault with a deadly weapon call. Upon arrival, officers were told by a security officer that a woman with a rifle had recently fired a round near security.

According to a news release, a collective decision was made to de-escalate the situation by containing the area and speaking with the woman. Officers shut down Trade Street and the surrounding area. The area was also evacuated and the scene was secured. Officers did not fire back at the suspect.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg police said that the person was detained without incident by CMPD’s SWAT Team around 7:30 a.m.

The subject was transported by MEDIC to a medical facility to be further evaluated. No injuries were reported.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.
