CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Veteran and former Carolina Panthers’ Cam Newton has been released from the New England Patriots and rookie Mac Jones will take the role as starting quarterback, according to multiple news sources.
The release comes after Newton started Sunday against the New York Giants. Prior to the game, Newton missed three practices last week due to a COVID-19 protocol “misunderstanding”. He has not addressed reporters in regards to the missed practices.
Jones, the first-round pick from Alabama, who played during Sunday’s game relieved Newton and played well into the third quarter, all with the backups helping to bring home a preseason win.
Jones finished the preseason 36-of-52 for 389 yards, with one touchdown and no interceptions, according to ESPN. He was sacked four times in Sunday’s finale after having been sacked just once in the earlier two preseason games.
The new starting quarterback led three scoring drives as the Patriots capped a perfect preseason with a 22-20 victory over the Giants, according to a news report.
