GASTONIA, N.C. — Gastonia Police have opened a death investigation after finding a body in Rankin Lake on Friday morning.
Officers responded to the report of a possible dead person floating in the water around 8 a.m. Upon arrival, officers located the reported body in the lake.
Detectives later identified the body as that of 28-year-old Deontre Dameron of Gastonia, and say an autopsy is being performed by the Gaston County Medical Examiner’s office to determine the cause and manner of his death.
Rankin Lake Park was closed for an hour while detectives investigated, and has since been reopened to the public.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.
