CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Detectives are investigating a fatal head-on collision in east Charlotte after a 44-year-old man was killed on Sunday.
Officers responded to the collision on Parkwood Avenue and say in the road, with extensive front-end damage to each car, they found a 2004 Mazda RX-8 and a 2017 Toyota Camry.
The driver of the Mazda, 44-year-old Damon Blackwell, was pronounced dead at the scene from the injuries he sustained in the collision, according to a news release.
Officers say the driver of the Toyota, Sidi Amar Vi, was taken to a local hospital with minor injuries following the crash.
Detectives say preliminary investigation reveals the Mazda was traveling north on Parkwood Avenue at a high rate of speed when he entered a curve in the road to the right.
The Mazda was traveling too fast to make the curve and crossed the double yellow land divider into the opposing lanes of travel where he hit the Toyota head-on, which was traveling south on Parkwood Avenue, according to a news release.
Police say Blackwell was not wearing a seatbelt, and impairment is suspected.
The investigation into this collision remains active and ongoing.
