Flags Of Remembrance Placed In Romare Bearden Park To Honor Lives Lost In 9/11

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Nearly 3,000 flags in the shape of the Twin Towers were placed in Romare Bearden Park in Uptown Charlotte on Friday to honor 9/11 victims.

The Firefighter Steven Coakley Foundation is responsible for presenting the “Flags of Remembrance,” with foundation officials holding a reflective memorial service at the park on Saturday during the 20th anniversary of the September 11th attacks.

Officials say at the memorial service a bell tolled at prominent times and a replica of the Twin Towers was on-site for guests to sign and share their thoughts.

With each flag placed, officials say photos of every victim of the 9/11 attacks were attached in order to honor their memory.

A steel beam from the World Trade Center was also put on display.

Retired FDNY Battalion Chief Frank Poulin spoke at the event reflecting personally on what happened and the impacts of 9/11 on everyone.

Officials say the “Flags of Remembrance” will be removed on Monday, September 13th beginning at 8 a.m. and volunteers are needed to help complete this task.

The Firefighter Steven Coakley Foundation, founded in memory of fallen first responder Steven Coakley, provides educational scholarships and donates funds and equipment to local emergency services to increase the safety of the public and first responders.

Officials with the foundation say “‘We will never forget’ … best describes the mission of the foundation. Not just about what happened to so manyΒ people on September 11, 2001 and how our lives have changed but ‘we will never forget’ about how Steve and soΒ many firefighters lived their lives and were always there to help us.”
