Netflix Fires Employee Who Was Organizing Transgender Employee Walkout
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Netflix staff member who helped organize an upcoming transgender employee walkout is off the job. Netflix fired the employee, who is Black and pregnant, on suspicion that they leaked financial information about the Dave Chappelle special to the news media. The information included metrics about how much Netflix paid for the special and how many people it reached.
Netflix has been embroiled in controversy surrounding the Dave Chappelle special, after it was widely criticized for being transphobic. Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos has defended the special multiple times. In a memo sent to staffers, Sarandos writes, “We are working hard to ensure marginalized communities aren’t defined by a single story. So we have Sex Education, Orange is the New Black, Control Z, Hannah Gadsby and Dave Chappelle all on Netflix. Key to this is increasing diversity on the content team itself.”
Gadsby, an Emmy-winning comedian, is now firing back at Sarandos for using her name to defend Chappelle. In an Instagram post, Gadsby says she now has to deal with hate and anger from Dave Chappelle fans, and says she doesn’t get paid enough to be a part of the controversy.
But back to that employee who leaked the info because they were offended by Dave Chappelle’s transphobic jokes. Was Netflix right to fire the employee?
