Death Investigation in East Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Press Release) — Detectives with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Homicide Unit are conducting a death investigation near the 3200 block Shamrock Drive in the Eastway Division.

 Shortly after 8:41 pm, on December 22, 2021, officers responded to a Domestic Violence Assault with a Deadly Weapon. Upon arrival, officers learned that the suspect forced a female into a car and fled the scene.  Officers were able to determine the description of the vehicle.  Detectives with the Real Time Crime Center were able to locate the car on the cameras in the Eastway Division.  Officers were able to locate the vehicle and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.  The suspect failed to stop, and a vehicle pursuit began.  The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department’s Helicopter and Canine Units also responded to assist in the vehicle pursuit.

During the pursuit the suspect fired shots at officers.  One of the vehicles was struck by gunfire however no officers were injured.  Officers did not return gunfire at any point during this incident.  After the vehicle then came to a stop at the 3200 block of Shamrock Drive, officers discovered the suspect was suffering from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.   The suspect was pronounced deceased on scene by Medic.

Homicide Unit detectives responded to the incident scene to conduct an investigation. Crime Scene Search responded to process the scene and collect physical evidence. CMPD’s Operations Command, Victim Services, CFD, and Medic also assisted.

The Homicide Unit is not looking for any additional suspects. The preliminary investigation has concluded that the victim and suspect were known to each other.
