Mecklenburg County Health Officials To Distribute Free At-Home COVID-19 Test Kits January 8th

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Health officials will distribute free at-home COVID-19 test kits to Mecklenburg County residents at two different sites in the county on January 8th.

Officials urge residents experiencing symptoms of COVID-19, who have been struggling to access a local testing site or buy an at-home test kit, to visit one of the sites from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday to pick up a free at-home test kit.

Mecklenburg County Public Health officials say they will provide a limited number of the kits at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology and Bojangles Coliseum.

Officials say entrances to the distribution sites will be blocked prior to the site opening, and to ensure community safety, individuals will not be permitted to wait in line blocking roadways.

Individuals seeking a test kit at one of the distribution sites on Saturday are asked to please be aware:

  • To best meet the urgent demand in the community, Public Health will provide two test kits (four tests) per household. The kits are available while supplies last.
  • No appointment is necessary. Public Health staff will offer kits based on a walk/drive-up basis.
  • Since at-home test kits do not require clinical supervision, a prescription from a health care provider is not required.

Since there is such a high demand, officials say supplies of free at-home COVID-19 test kits in Mecklenburg County continue to be limited for future distribution.
