Thousands Lose Power After Man Climbs 85-Foot Electrical Tower & Refuses To Come Down
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Police still don’t know what led a man to climb an 85-foot electrical transmission tower in South Charlotte.
He stayed there for hours on Sunday afternoon, acting erratically, and refusing to come down.
Police, fire, and MEDIC responded to 911 calls around 2:00 on Sunday afternoon about the man on the tower, off Woodlawn Road, near I-77.
Police say Duke Energy had to cut power to 15,000 – 20,000 customers in West Charlotte.
After nearly four hours, the man climbed down after negotiating with police.
“I don’t know what your faith is, but I think God was watching over him today, to be quite honest with you. I mean, he is a very, very fortunate individual,” said Major Brian Foley, with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police.
Police say the man, who remains unidentified, is now at Atrium Hospital getting medical attention.
