Man Dies After Fire In Abandoned Kannapolis Grocery Store

MOORESVILLE, N.C. — One man is dead after a fire broke out at an abandoned building in Kannapolis on Thursday, according to the Kannapolis Fire Department.

Firefighters responded to the abandoned commercial building on Sumner Avenue, formerly a discount grocery store, after multiple 911 calls came in regarding a fire at the site.

As firefighters worked to extinguish the fire, they found an unresponsive man, Christopher Casey, 41, inside the structure.

Fire officials say although Casey was rescued from the building, CPR attempts failed and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

Kannapolis Fire Marshals and Kannapolis Police are currently investigating the cause of the fire.
