CONCORD, N.C. — A 24-year-old Concord man has been charged with fatally shooting his mother early Tuesday, according to the police department.
The Concord Police Department responded to a Brookstone Drive NW residence in Concord around 12:45 a.m. to assist the Cabarrus County EMS.
EMS was originally called to the address for a medical related incident. As they were leaving the residence, multiple gunshots were heard coming from the home, according to a news release.
Once officers arrived at the scene, they made contact with Ya-Qway Sawyer as he was attempting to leave the scene. Sawyer was detained while officers checked the residence.
According to authorities, while checking the home, Sawyer’s mother, Katrina Smith, was found dead in her bathroom suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Sawyer was charged with one count of murder, police said. He is currently being held in the Cabarrus County jail under no bond.
Concord Police are continuing the investigation to determine a motive for the shooting.
