Wilson’s World: The Charlotte Museum of History

CHARLOTTE N.C. – On Feb. 5, The Charlotte Museum of History will open a new exhibit of photographs and stories about the Rosenwald Schools, these schools had a major impact on American Society. Congressman John Lewis, Maya Angelou, Langston Hughes and James Baldwin all attended a Rosenwald School. Charlotte is the 2nd city in the nation to host this new exhibit, “A Better Life for Their Children: Julius Rosenwald, Booker T. Washington, and the 4,978 Schools that Changed America

‎North Carolina had more Rosenwald Schools than any other state. Mecklenburg County had 26 Rosenwald Schools, only 7 of those buildings remain. The museum is leading a community effort to save one of those schools through the Save Siloam School Project, which has raised more than $670,000. This history is incredibly relevant in Charlotte today as our city works to improve equity and opportunity for everyone, especially in our school system.
The museum if located at 3500 Shamrock Drive, find out more at charlottemuseum.org
