Experts Offer Safe Driving Tips During Wintry Weather
CHARLOTTE — It is dangerous to drive during wintry weather. If you have to go out tonight, we want you to be safe.
There are dozens of NCDOT trucks loaded up with sand and salt out on the road during wintry weather conditions — steer clear of them. Most drivers won’t be able to see cars if you follow too closely. If you’re traveling along the interstate, you may encounter black ice which could cause drivers to slide.
“Folks have to realize that you can’t drive the same way as you can on a clear, dry sunny day when there’s ice in the forecast, snow in the forecast, sleet and freezing rain,” says Jen Thompson with NCDOT.
If you’re driving out on the roads during a winter storm experts say remember to slow down, and drive super smoothly – any jerky movements with the brakes or accelerator can cause you to spin out of control. Also, look far ahead — if you can see any slick spot on the road you have time to anticipate what to do next. And, deal with the skids — don’t panic and don’t stab the breaks. Experts say ease off the gas and turn the steering wheel in the same direction the rear is sliding.
