CFD: South Charlotte Apartment Building Catches Fire After Smoking Occupant Falls Asleep 

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — One person was sent to the hospital after an apartment building in south Charlotte caught on fire early Saturday morning, according to the Charlotte Fire Department.

Officials say the fire was sparked by a lit cigarette.

Firefighters responded to the two-story apartment building on N. Wendover Road around 4 a.m. to see smoke and fire showing.

One person was hospitalized and the fire is estimated to have caused $30,000 in damages, according to CFD.

Investigators have determined the fire was the result of an occupant that fell asleep while smoking.
