CMPD Releases Body Camera Video Of November Deadly Officer-Involved Shooting

CHARLOTTE, NC. — CMPD body camera video shows the last moments of 33-year old Derrell Raney’s life. Investigators say Raney threatened a security guard with a gun just before 6 pm on November 5th in the parking lot of the Walmart on Albemarle Road. The security guard told two officers, who were taking a report nearby that a man had a gun and pointed it at them. You can see Raney holding the gun in the video. The officers start approaching Raney, saying, “Put your hands up, put your hands up now! Just show your hands.”

Seconds later, officers James Longworth and Micah Edmunds open fire after CMPD says they perceived a lethal threat. Officers go to Raney and handcuff him. Other officers arrive and start treating his injuries. Medic took him to the hospital, where he died.

Corine Mack is the president of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg NAACP. She says watching officers handcuff Raney before helping him is shocking.

“When you come upon a human being, if in fact, you see them as a human being, the first thing you do is not shoot them three times each, or shoot at them three times each. After you shot the person, even if it’s policy, someone should be checking to see if that persons is alive and give them first aid,” says Mack.

CMPD Sgt. Steve Winterhalter says, “Mr. Raney initially falls to his side. While lying on his side, the video clearly indicates that he is still in possession of the weapon and may still pose a lethal threat towards the officers so long as he continues to possess that weapon.”

Police say just before six that morning, Raney called 911 saying he found two bodies off Winding Cedar Trail. Investigators found no bodies. CMPD’s Crisis Intervention Team members responded, urging Raney to be evaluated at the hospital, but say he refused. Responding officers found him to be lucid and not a danger to himself or others. Mack says she’s hurting for the family.
