MATTHEWS, N.C. — A 30-year-old Charlotte man has been arrested after stealing over $2,000 worth of merchandise from a Sam’s Club in Matthews Thursday afternoon.
Matthews police officers responded to the Sam’s Club, located on Windsor Square Drive, around 2:45 p.m. regarding a larceny.
Sam’s Club staff informed the police department that a man had pushed out a shopping cart containing several items of merchandise that had not been paid for. As officers approached the area, a man fitting the suspect description was seen pushing a shopping cart in an adjacent parking lot.
When officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, he immediately fled on foot. Following a brief chase on foot within the Windsor Square Shopping Center, he was taken into custody.
The suspect, identified as Demontrey King, was in possession of over $2,000 of stolen merchandise when he was apprehended, according to police.
Medic was requested to the scene to evaluate the suspect and an officer who suffered minor injuries during the incident.
After being evaluated and cleared by Medic, the suspect was formally arrested, and transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail. According to police, King was charged with felony larceny, damage to property, and resisting public office.
