20-Plus Multi-Vehicle Crash Shuts Down Part Of Highway 421 South In Watauga County

WATAUGA COUNTY, N.C. — A multi-vehicle crash has shut down Highway 421 South on the mountain in Watauga County Monday morning, according to the fire department.

The Deep Gap Fire Department said that around 7:45 a.m. over 20 vehicles were involved in the crash.

Old 421 Southbound is also shut down from Brown’s Chapel Road to Parkcrest Drive due to the accident.

According to the fire department, all traffic will be diverted to Highway 221. Deep Gap Fire’s mutual aid department will be stopping traffic at the bottom of the mountain.

In addition to the Watauga County crash, the Deep Gap Fire Department is also working multiple multi-vehicle crashes including a 21 car collision at Highway 421 and Stony Fork and a 50 vehicle crash on Highway 421 near the sandpiles in Wilkes County.

There has been no immediate information regarding injuries.

The fire department is urging people to stay off the road until the NC Department of Transportation can get the area cleared. The road is expected to be cleared around noon, according to NCDOT.
