CMPD: Violent Crime Rates Drop In North Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — On Wednesday, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department applauded ongoing crime reduction efforts in North Charlotte during a news conference.

Authorities say in January, the North Tryon Division led all CMPD divisions with the most traffic stops (808) and gun seizures (31), but overall crime in North Tryon is down by 15 percent from this time last year.

Those numbers include drops in murder (down 50 percent), rape (down 100 percent, and robberies (down 41 percent), according to a news release.

CMPD says it has focused crime reduction efforts on “corridors of opportunity” of traditionally high crime areas.

CMPD’s 41/40 Project was established in October of 2018 to combat historical crime trends and eliminate violent crime in the West Sugar Creek Road & I-85 corridor.

Officers worked to do that by building relationships in the community with local businesses and residents, as well as familiarizing themselves with the area.

Authorities say in 2019, overall crime fell 11 percent and violent crime fell 23 percent in the Sugar Creek/I-85 corridor.

In 2020 & 2021, authorities say violent crime remained below historical norms and in 2022, while property crime is reported to be on the rise, violent crime went down by 50 percent with no reported robberies in the area.
