UNION COUNTY, N.C. — A death investigation is underway after an inmate was found unresponsive at the Union County Jail Friday morning, according to deputies.
Around 6:15 a.m., during the morning meal service at the jail, an officer recognized a 32-year-old inmate was unresponsive and began to provide medical care.
The male inmate was transported to a local hospital by Union EMS and was pronounced dead, according to officials.
The inmate’s name has not been released.
Through standard protocol for a death investigation involving a person in custody, Sheriff Cathey has requested the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation handle the investigation into this matter.
At this point, there has been no evidence to suggest foul play in the death of the inmate, the sheriff’s office said.
