Man Shoots at Salisbury Police After He Pretended To Be An Officer

SALISBURY, N.C. — A Davidson County man is accused of shooting at a police parking garage after he pretended to be a new recruit.

Around 6 p.m. on February 28th, Bruce Godwin, 32, approached a Salisbury police officer in the police department garage.

Godwin said that he had recently been hired by the Salisbury Police Department and was there to pick up some of his equipment.

The officer did not recognize Godwin and asked him to leave, which he did.

Around 5:30 a.m. the next morning, March 1st, Godwin came back and parked in the parking lot beside the Salisbury Police Department.

About 30 minutes later, officers started arriving for their morning shift briefing and, once several officers were in the parking garage, Godwin shot four times towards the garage.

Godwin left the area before officers realized what had happened, but he was immediately identified as the shooter from surveillance video.

Warrants were issued for Godwin’s arrest, and the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office arrested him at his home.

He is charged with three counts of Felony Discharging Weapon into an Occupied Property and five counts of Felony Assault on Law Enforcement with a Firearm.

Godwin is in the Rowan County Detention Center with a $100,000 bond.

The Salisbury Police Department would like to thank the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation for their assistance.
