Deputies: Woman Found Shot To Death Inside Rowan County Home, Man Charged

ROCKWELL, N.C. — Detectives have charged a Salisbury man with murder after a woman was found shot to death in Rowan County on Saturday.

Police were dispatched to a home on Cannon Street in Rockwell, N.C. around 7:40 p.m., in reference to a gunshot victim at the home.

On the scene, deputies were met by a white man named Melvin Morton in the living room of the home.

Upon a further search, deputies located the body of a white woman laying on the bedroom floor.

Police say the woman was the obvious victim of a gunshot wound and was dead.

She has been identified as Kristy Hiatt, 48.

Investigators responded to the scene shortly after to conduct interviews and collect evidence.

Early Sunday morning, detectives charged Melvin Morton, 60, of Salisbury with Murder and Possession of a Firearm by a Felon.

Deputies say he is being held in the Rowan County Detention Center under no bond.

The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.
