CHARLOTTE, N.C. — A 19-year-old is facing a murder charge after a man died days following being physically assaulted in east Charlotte, according to police.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department responded to East W.T. Harris Boulevard, at North Sharon Amity Road, around 6:50 p.m. on Saturday for a check welfare call for service. Upon arrival, officers learned the victim, identified as 48-year-old Santos Maldonado, was assaulted.
Officials say Maldonado was transported to the hospital with visible injuries.
Through an investigation, detectives identified Edis Serrano-Perez as the suspect in the case who physically assaulted the victim by punching him twice and kicking him in the head. Detectives then obtained an assault inflicting serious injury arrest warrant for Serrano-Perez.
Maldonado’s condition deteriorated and he was pronounced dead on Monday. The case transitioned to a homicide investigation and a murder arrest warrant was obtained for the suspect.
Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers worked with the suspect’s mother and the suspect to turn himself in on Wednesday at the Law Enforcement Center. Serrano-Perez was interviewed and transferred to the custody of the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office and charged with murder, according to police.
The investigation into this case is active and ongoing.
