CMPD Officer Helps Delivers Baby Safely While Off-Duty

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — Police say an off-duty CMPD officer was helping direct traffic Thursday afternoon when she helped a woman giving birth in her backseat deliver her baby safely.

Officer M. Brennan was directing traffic at Sugar Creek Charter School in northeast Charlotte around 4:22 p.m. when she was flagged down by someone waving frantically.

Police say she ran over and noticed a woman in labor in the backseat of her car.

Officer Brennan immediately sprang into action by putting on gloves and instructing the woman to push.

After one push, police say the baby arrived.

Officer Brennan wrapped the newborn in a blanket and placed the baby on the mother’s chest for skin-to-skin contact.

The baby then let out a cry, according to a news release.

Mecklenburg EMS Agency and the Charlotte Fire Department arrived on the scene shortly after.

When Officer Brennan was asked why she executed such a courageous act she said,

“I am a mother. I have children too. I am glad I was there at the right time to help.”
