Man Arrested For Catalytic Converter Theft In Matthews

MATTHEWS, N.C. — A Charlotte man has been arrested after attempting to steal a catalytic converter from a vehicle in a parking lot at a Matthews apartment complex Saturday night.

A Matthews police officer observed an occupied, suspicious vehicle around 11 p.m. on Matthews Commons Drive, off of Sam Newell Road. The location is MAA Matthews Commons apartment.

After talking to the driver, along with further investigation, the officer determined that the driver was attempting to remove and steal a catalytic converter from the vehicle that he was parked beside.

Through evidence and a witness statement, the suspect, identified as 37-year-old Brenton O’Brien, was connected to a catalytic converter theft that happened on March 18 in the same area, according to police.

He was arrested and transported to the Mecklenburg County Jail on charges of felony attempted larceny, carrying concealed weapon, and larceny of motor vehicle parts.
