It is a one-two punch as dual Coronal Mass Ejections are forecast to strike Earth on Thursday. A G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm watch is now in effect for Thursday.
For the areas shaded in green above, it is not a guarantee you will see the northern lights, but a possibility! The Aurora forecast shows a possible 7 on the Kp index for Thursday which is very high. The KP number is a number that measures the strength of the aurora. If the forecast verifies it will not be like the pictures and videos you think of, rather a green tint to the sky along the horizon.
“Impacts to technology from a G3 storm generally remain small, but it can drive the aurora further equatorward of its polar home. Aurora may be visible over the northern tier states if the conditions are favorable.” – Space Weather Prediction Center
If you have friends or family across the northern 1/4 of the United States be sure to tell them to look outside early Thursday morning with a view of the northern horizon.
