Dozens Of Businesses In Plaza Midwood Coming Together To Find Solutions After A Violent Weekend

CHARLOTTE, NC. — Cell phone video shows a masked gunman, with what appears to be a rifle, hiding behind a car in the Diamond Restaurant parking lot. This is across the street from Peculiar Rabbit early Saturday morning. People in the area heard numerous shots. Police found various shell casings on the ground and a bullet hit a vehicle but no one got hurt. Hours later, we’re told even more shots rang out in Plaza Midwood.

“We’ve seen crime in the past, but these events this past weekend just kind of caused us to draw our attention and gather together and sort of assess,” says Clifton Castelloe.

Castello is the president of the Plaza Midwood Merchants Association. He called a meeting here at dish Wednesday afternoon for business owners in the area to come up with strategic solutions. More than 50 business owners, CMPD officers, and city council member Larken Egleston showed up. I’m told the meeting was productive and they talked about adding security cameras in strategic locations and having more off-duty officers patrolling the neighborhood. They already have some patrolling on weekends.

“We are sort of an active discussion on how often that should occur, right now it’s Friday and Saturday nights which tend to be  busy nights here in the neighborhood.”
