Levine Museum Sells Uptown Building, Will Be Replaced By High-Rise Luxury Apartments

CHARLOTTE N.C., (News Release) — Levine Museum of the New South is pleased to announce the sale of its Uptown building to Vela Uptown LLC, a New York-based development company that plans a high-rise apartment building for a range of tenants in the heart of the North Tryon redevelopment corridor.

The $10.75 million sale is an important milestone in the ongoing transformation of Levine Museum. For 20 years, the current location has served as a central gathering place for courageous exhibitions, productive dialogue, and community celebrations. The proceeds from the sale of the building will enable the Museum to continue that work in a newer, more flexible space, and to invest in creating robust digital experiences.

The nationally acclaimed Museum will remain open to visitors in its 7th Street location through May 15 and will continue to provide digital and neighborhood-based exhibits after its departure. Levine Museum will temporarily relocate to VAPA, the Visual and Performing Arts Center just blocks away on North Tryon Street.

“Levine Museum has told stories of Charlotte and the New South for 30 years,” said Kieth Cockrell, Levine Museum Board Chair and President of Bank of America Charlotte. “Our Museum has been a catalyst for provocative programming that prompts dialogue and fosters understanding. This transaction better positions Levine Museum for our next 30 years given the evolving Museum landscape.”

The Museum will unveil a pop-up exhibit in Charlotte’s Grier Heights neighborhood this spring. Last summer, in partnership with the City of Charlotte, the Museum launched “KnowCLT”, its first app-based digital walking tour of the Second Ward neighborhood formerly known as Brooklyn. A second digital walking tour, which will take users on an exploration of civil rights history across Uptown, is underway, targeted for release later this year. With guidance from educator and community advisory boards, the Museum is developing new programs to serve students and deepening its partnerships with libraries and community centers where programming will extend its reach.

“Levine Museum has earned a national reputation as a community-builder and an innovator,” said Kathryn Hill, president and CEO of Levine Museum. “We now continue that legacy of innovation, as we expand our work with communities to create programs and experiences that tell authentic stories, embrace technology, and animate history in ways that are accessible to everyone.”
