LINCOLNTON, N.C. — A 27-year-old Lincolnton woman has been charged with identity theft after making purchases on a stolen cell phone, deputies say.
The Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office received a report from the victim on March 18 stating that his cell phone was stolen from a grocery cart while he was shopping at Food Lion.
The victim informed officers that on March 14 he was contacted by Jessica Shull who stated she had his phone and wanted to return it. He then went to her address in Lincolnton and picked up the cell phone.
Soon after receiving the phone, he attempted to make a purchase with his bank card and it was denied because there were insufficient funds.
Deputies say after checking his bank statements it was revealed that Shull had made purchases of more than $2,000.
After confirming the bank charges, Lincoln County deputies charged Shull with obtaining property by false pretenses and financial identity theft.
Authorities arrested her on Thursday.
