The Potential Fallout From Cam Newton’s Sexist Remarks And How It Could Effect His Standing With The Panthers

CHARLOTTE, NC. — Former Panthers QB Cam Newton receiving major backlash after saying sexist comments during a podcast.

“A woman for me, is handling you your own but knowing how to cater to a man’s needs. Right?! And I think a lot of times when you get that aesthetic of I’m a boss (bleep). I’m a this, I’m a that. Like no baby. But you can’t cook. You don’t know when to be quiet. You don’t know how to let a man lead,” said Newton.

In 2017, sports reporter Jourdan Rodrigue asked Newton during a press conference to speak specifically on the pass routes another Panthers player ran. Cam snickered and laughed and said, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.”

“He did end up answering the question, but the damage was done there because it seemed obvious that Cam didn’t think a female really could report about football as well as a male,” says sports columnist for the Charlotte Observer Scott Fowler.

Fowler was Rodrigue’s colleague at the time. He says that became a controversy, and Newton lost at least one major sponsorship from it and lost countless fans.

“Cam Newton has learned nothing from what happened four years ago. He said some demeaning things that time or implied them about women, and four years later, here we are again.”

Fowler says this could impact any potential future with the Panthers.

“These comments to me make it even less likely I think that they will sign him. It’s just a little bit more baggage for a guy who’s already 32-years- old at the back end of his career.”
