JCSU Announces 2022 Commencement And Baccalaureate Speakers
CHARLOTTE N.C – (News Release) JCSU Announces Reverend Jemonde Taylor and Charlotte Vi Lyles as speakers for the University’s 149th Baccalaureate Commencement Service.
Father Taylor grew up in Saint Matthias’ Episcopal Church in Louisburg, N.C. where worked as an automotive performance and design engineer for Michelin Tire Company in Greenville, S.C., for three years before entering seminary.
He was ordained to the diaconate and preisthood in 2009. In earlier years, Taylor served as a priest at Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church in Dallas, Texas, as a part of the Lily Foundation Fellowship. In addition to his responsibilities at Saint Michael, his ministry encompassed Jubilee Park and Saint Philip’s School.
Taylor will deliver the keynote address to Johnson C. Smith University graduates during the 149th Baccalaureate Service at 4 p.m., Friday, May 13, 2022, in Jane M. Smith Memorial Church on the campus.

Democrat Vi Lyles is in her second term as Mayor of Charlotte, serving since December 2017. Under Lyles’ direction, Charlotte continues to lead the nation in community engagement
and action to address affordable housing.
Job growth has flourished under Lyles’ leadership, with the creation of more than 27,000 new jobs since she took office.
After retiring from the city, Lyles joined the Lee Institute and Flynn Health Holt Leadership as a consulting director, assisting not-for-profit governmental organizations in strategic planning and project implementation.
For Lyles, job creation is an important economic growth indicator, but workforce
development is her personal passion.
