Lenoir Police Capture Emu

LENIOR, N.C. – Officers with the Lenoir Police Department were assigned interesting duties over the weekend, when they responded to an emu rescue on Saturday, April 30th.

A female emu named Kevin showed up on Eastwood Park Drive SE near Hickory Boulevard and laid down beside a father and his three children.

The father called Lenoir Police to assist in catching Kevin. Officers not only managed to get a dog leash on Kevin, but they also fed her by hand and led her into a neighbor’s fenced-in backyard.

The Caldwell County Animal Care Enforcement Division came out to pick up and foster Kevin until they could locate her owners. It turns out Kevin lives in Moravian Falls, which is over 30 miles northeast of Lenoir as the emu walks. The emu is the second-largest living bird by height, after its ratite relative, the ostrich.
