Mother’s Day Gifts to Avoid with Hannah Keeley

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Moms are absolutely awesome, and their big day is coming up on May 8th… but are there any Mother’s Day gifts Dads should absolutely avoid?

“Try giving Mom something she wants, instead of something you want,” says Hannah. “Moms want to be celebrated on Mother’s Day, not given a subtle message that she needs to improve in some way. Moms are constantly plagued with the feeling that they’re not enough as it is, so these four gifts are going to push those buttons, backfire on you bigtime, and leave her wondering ‘Is this really a gift for me, or is this a gift for YOU?’:

Gift #1 – A Day Planner: (subtle message – you’re not organized enough)
We get it – she’s occasionally late for things. After all, she did just bring the kids back from two different soccer practices! The gift of acceptance and patience is what Mom really wants, instead of being reminded of your need for her to be on time every time!

Gift #2 – Work Out Gear: (subtle message – you’re not fit enough)
We get it – after three children, she may not be as trim as she once was. Trust me, Mom knows that too. She doesn’t need a reminder of that on Mother’s Day, but she would like to know how much you love her irregardless. Plus, you’ve put on a few pounds too… how would you feel if she got you a weight loss kit for Father’s Day?

Gift #3 – Makeup or Personal Care Items: (subtle message – you’re not pretty enough)
We get it – she’s not always as made up as she was when you were dating. She’d probably love to be, but most times it’s just not practical. At all. Mascara and cooking dinner in a hot kitchen aren’t a winning combination – I know that from personal experience. How about this: we’ll take care of buying our makeup and personal care items, and you take care of hiring the babysitter and creating the night out on the town where we can get made up – deal?

Gift #4 – Lingerie: (subtle message – you’re not sexy enough)
Dads – this is Mother’s Day… not Feed Your Fantasy Day. Again, the day is about her… not you. And we get it – the ‘hair pulled back in a bun, sweat from running after the kids, vomit-stained t-shirt after feeding the newborn’ look isn’t tremendously sexy. Trust me – we get it! But on Mother’s Day, we would so love for you to look past all that and see us as sexy irregardless. You might get your own gift if you do!
