MOORESVILLE, N.C. – Mooresville Police Department responded to a call regarding a man, Robert Berry, planning to harm himself and resulted in an officer discharging his weapon five times, according to a media release. Berry succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical care.
In the early morning of Wednesday, November 8, 2023, MPD states they received a call from Lake Norman Regional Medical Center. LNRMC state they learned a man was planning to harm himself in the facility parking lot. They reported to the police that they observed he had a weapon in his pocket.
The release states MPD reported to the scene and commanded Berry to drop his firearm. The release further states Berry complied and then picked the weapon back up and posed a threat to the officers. Officers responded with discharging their weapons.
Berry sustained injuries and officers began lifesaving aid before LNRMC professionals took over, according to the release. He succumbed to his injuries.
MPD say the involved officer is on administrative leave pending further investigation per standard protocol.
