CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A judge sentenced a convicted domestic violence offender from Charlotte to nearly three years in prison for illegally possessing a firearm by a felon, according to the United States Attorney’s Office.
Court documents revealed that a 911 phone call on September 17, 2021 reported a male physically assaulting and strangling a female in a parking lot at a grocery store.
The male suspect, later identified as 26-year-old Gregory Dashawn Fondren, ran away when police officers arrived at the scene. Witnesses told officers that Fondren put the woman in a headlock before punching and kicking her while she was on the ground.
Officers located and arrested Fondren shortly after prior to seizing his backpack that contained a .38 caliber revolver. Fondren was prohibited from possessing a firearm due to previous convictions of assault by strangulation and common law robbery.
Fondren remains in custody and will serve his 46-month sentence at a federal facility. He will serve three years of supervised release following his prison sentence.
